Competely agree with this. There should definitely be something available that is as simple as a single-line as well as a multi-line text box to allow the student to freely type their responses. Most importantly, this isn't dependence on a correct/incorrect answer basis.
It is quite surprising that something so simple isn't available already, especially in this day and age.
